Try this traditional and seasonal recipe for a Florida Cocktail. Tastes delicious and will kick their appetite into readiness for the main meal. It’s bursting with citrus goodness too!
Ingredients
- 2 oranges
- 2 grapefruits
- 25g sugar
Directions
- Cut both of the grapefruit in half and remove the segments then place in a bowl.
- Cut the top and bottom off each orange then cut out each segment so the flesh is released, leaving the pith between the slices.
- Add the orange segments to the grapefruit.
- Strain the juice into a saucepan, add the sugar and slowly heat to make a syrup. Pour over the fruit segments and mix gently. Leave to cool then refrigerate.
- Divide the fruit and syrup between the glass serving dishes.
Top Tips
- This recipe can also be made with satsumas or clementines so younger children can help. They can be peeled easily and there is less need to remove the white pith.
- Don’t overheat the syrup mixture, it only needs enough heat for the sugar to dissolve.
- For added effect,, run a halved lemon around the rims of the serving dishes before dipping in caster sugar. When dried it will give a frosted effect.
Alternatives to try
- Use white, red and pink grapefruit for a more colourful result!
- Sprinkle the finished cocktail with pomegranate seeds for a seasonal touch.
- Top each cocktail with a sprig of mint before serving.
- Try adding kiwi fruit or chunks of melon.
